Woman-owned swimwear- Part 1April 20th, 2022 by Cynthia Bruno
We’re gearing up for summer over here, and that means starting to get everyone ready for the pool, lake, beach, and backyard sprinkler.
Kelly and I have been shopping (almost) exclusively from women owned, founded, or run companies for about 18 months. When it came to bathing suit shopping, I thought I’d get really frustrated by narrowing down the brands I could shop from. But, as we’ve been learning all along, when women are in charge of making the clothes that our bodies need to wear- things just tend to fit better. Here’s a look at some of our favorite women-run swimwear around right now.
If you’re looking for a great true bikini-style-bikini, check out Kulani Kinis. This red little (and I do mean little) number held up great pool side and on the beach. I love that it’s a really classic bikini with good material. I wore it a ton last summer and plan to do the same this summer. Kulani Kinis was founded by Danielle Atkins after she got frustrated buying expensive swimwear for vacations that didn’t live up to the price tag. The quality of this suit is spot on. I’d size up from your normal bikini size. I’m usually small, but wearing a medium here in the top and bottoms.
Next up is Summersalt. With its nearly cult-like following, it’s not hard to see why women are impressed with their swimwear. I really like the options of tops and bottoms that you can mix up and still get a matching two piece. Also, their color-blocked one pieces are bestsellers for the flattering fit. How did cofounders Lori Coulter and Reshma Chamberlin get the fit just right? They scanned the bodies of 10,000 women and used that information to make suits that fit each one of them! Check out Summersalt, a good destination for everyone, but especially for those Miss MVPs who have a hard time with their swimwear fitting well. Summersalt makes swim in sizes 0-24!
Alright- now let’s talk about sun protection. Look no further than Line in the Sand. Their SPF 50+ swimwear is made from recycled plastic and 100% of their profits are donated to ocean and cancer organizations. It really cannot get any better than that. Plus we love the age and size inclusive models they use! This protective tunic is so chic. Line in the Sand was founded by Lynne Fletcher O’Brien who couldn’t find comfortable and flattering swim options for active women.
Let us put you on to Night Dive Swim. Hello size inclusivity! From Small to 6x, Night Dive Swim has something for EVERY. BODY. We’re loving the bold colors and fit options, and the ethically sourced materials to make the swimwear. Founded by Heather Caye Brown, Night Dive Swim produces zero waste and their left-over fabric scraps are used to help the local community of Bali, where their swimwear is manufactured. All Night Dive Swim employees are entitled to free medical & hospital company insurance covering family members. That all makes me want to click, click, click- and honestly, it’s why Miss Market exists, so you can shop with a purpose too.
Here’s to some fun in the sun.
